RAF Typhoon FGR4s have operated alongside French aircraft in a joint strike against an hidden munitions depot in Syria employed by the Islamic State group (IS), per a report from the UK's MoD.

The location, identified by intelligence, was thought to be storing arms and explosives, the statement said, and was situated in mountains just north of Palmyra in the heart of Syria.

"Our fighter planes employed precision-guided Paveway IV munitions to target a series of access tunnels providing entry to the facility... early reports are that the target was engaged successfully," the MoD said.

There was no sign of any civilian impact in the strike conducted Saturday night and each participating jet made a safe return, the MoD added.

The Typhoon fighters were backed up by a Voyager tanker plane.

Daesh - referred to as the so-called Islamic State - established jihadist rule over large swathes of Iraq and Syria until 2019.

"This strike demonstrates our UK leadership, and determination to operate in unison with allied nations, to eliminate any re-emergence of the terrorist group and their dangerous and violent ideologies in the Middle East," the British Defence Secretary John Healey remarked.

RAF aircraft have carried out patrols over Syrian airspace to "prevent any attempted resurgence" of IS subsequent to its defeat at the battle of Baghuz in the year 2019, the MoD reported.

"I extend gratitude to all the members of British forces involved in this operation for their expertise and their bravery," Healey added. "They were among thousands of British troops on duty over the holidays. This action, to take out terrorist threats who threaten our safety, highlights how British military are ready to step up, continuously, keeping Britain secure domestically and powerful internationally."

In December, the American forces executed what it termed a "massive strike" on Daesh sites in Syria, after an ambush killed two American soldiers and a civilian interpreter in the Palmyra area.

The UN says IS still maintains an estimated 5,000 to 7,000 combatants in Iraq and Syria.
